Employment: NCP Alchohols Expansion Project

20/01/2020

Large turnout of unemployed engineering and construction workers

On Monday 20 January 2020, a large  number of engineering & construction workers turned up at the gates of NCP Alchohols chemical plant north of Durban in the hope of finding work on their upcoming project.Rumour has it that this project is a hoax and that no expansion work is taking place at the above-mentioned facility.A certain member or members of NCP office staff stated that there is no work taking place at the plant to members of the public who contacted them telephonically.

Nevertheless admin members of the non profit Facebook group "Construction Iron Dogz" were on hand to facilitate proceedings at the gathering and to get feedback from management as well as to collect people's cv's and to draw up a list of all the unemployed people present irrespective of colour, race or creed.

Now,who do you believe? The rumour mill or the fact that civil work has been ongoing for more than a year in preparation for plant expansion which entails electrical, boilermaking, welding, mechanical- fitting, structural steel work, brick & mortar work to  name but a few trades involved in any big project.Construction Iron Dogz has given us assurances that we will be updated via their facebook page as to further proceedings concerning this "hoax"project.

I applaud the people that took the time and effort to  present themselves at the site to try and gain
some sort of employment. There was a strong police presence at the gates but the gathering went off calmly and orderly. One just has to look at the pictures to see that there is no skills shortage in Durban.I was present there myself as I am also an out of work  construction worker and I know most of the people present there personally. Most of the people present at the gathering are qualified in the various disciplines of engineering and construction including safety officers/watchers and QA-QC.

The Department Of Home Affairs and the Department Of Labour need to take a hard, long look at the dire situation we South African citizens find ourselves in  being unemployed before they issue work visas to foreign labour because
we are being overlooked by the contracting companies.
Time will tell but the people are fed up with
this unlawful practice of hiring expats before
exhausting local labour first as stipulated by
law.I will update this blog as soon as I get feedback
from Construction Iron Dogz admin with regard to
developments at NCP Alchohols, stay tutned .I will post
a link to this blog on the Construction Iron Dogz facebook
page for all to see and share.Unity is strength!

Cheers,Lyndon Kurt Gilbert.
